Business challenge

Production status is often known only at shift end, when paper job cards are collected and entered. Downtime causes are recorded from memory, scrap is attributed loosely, and planners schedule against numbers that are already hours out of date.

Proposed solution

A manufacturing execution layer where work orders are dispatched digitally to stations, operators confirm progress as it happens, and machine signals are captured directly — giving planners live status instead of an end-of-shift reconstruction.

Architecture overview

An edge collection service ingests machine signals and operator confirmations, buffering locally so a network outage never stops the line. A work-order service manages routing, station sequencing, and status transitions. Time-series storage holds machine telemetry while relational storage holds orders and quality records. OEE, downtime, and scrap analytics are computed from the same event stream.

Scalability

Edge services run per line and buffer locally, so plants operate independently of central availability. Time-series data is downsampled on a retention schedule, and additional lines or plants are added without redesign.

  • Signed firmware and authenticated edge agents
  • Role-based access separating operator and supervisor actions
  • Local buffering to survive network partition without data loss
